How to Choose a Drug Rehabilitation Center
Choosing a rehabilitation centre
for yourself or loved one can be
a daunting task and many people
may be unaware of what they should
be looking for. Because there is
such a wide variety of programs
and treatment facilities out there,
asking the right questions becomes
an essential part of choosing the
right rehabilitation centre to fit
your individual and family needs.
As such, patients should be prepared
to do some research prior to enrolling
in any one particular program or
centre to ensure that it is the
right one for them.
Medical Supervision
Because
drug and alcohol addiction progresses in fairly predictable
stages, it is imperative that the addict be properly diagnosed
by a trained healthcare professional or medical doctor in
order to be prescribed with the proper treatment. That being
said, it may be in your best interests to choose a rehabilitation
facility equipped with round-the-clock medical staff to ensure
the safe withdrawal from drugs or alcohol and remain on-hand
to monitor progress and/or prescribe necessary changes to
the treatment program. Drug rehabilitation centers that have
been granted a JCAHO accreditation (Joint Commission on Accreditation
of Healthcare Organizations) meet national standards for providing
quality medical care and consequently offer some of the best
choices for treatment programs.
Cost
In a perfect world, the cost of drug rehabilitation would
be unimportant but in order to ensure the best quality care
for your money, be sure to inquire about what exactly is included
in the price tag and what may be added to your bill as a fee-for-service
program. If you are enrolled in a health insurance policy,
find out how much will be covered under your plan.
Variety of Programs
All drug rehab centers should ideally offer a number of different
treatment programs that cater to the individual needs of their
patients such as inpatient, residential, outpatient and/or
short term options, as well as personal and group therapy
options.
Continuing
Care Programs
Because recovery from drug dependency is a life long journey,
it is important that a drug rehabilitation center offer a
quality continuing care program. Such programs are essential
in aiding the addict in his or her reintegration back into
society while executing the skills and strategies learned
in rehab.
Other Questions To Consider
While there is no exhaustive list of questions to ask when
choosing a rehabilitation centre, the following list is a
partial example of what you may want to consider:
- What is their philosophy on addiction?
- What are the administrators’ and staffs’
credentials?
- How does their treatment program differ from other drug
rehabilitation centers?
- How long will it take to complete the treatment program?
- Is the family involved in the treatment program and what
is the degree of that involvement?
- How is the reintegration process back into mainstream
society structured and monitored?
- What is their success rate?
